Duffus Spynie & Hopeman

Three ruined churches in one outing - that's what Duffus, Spynie and Hopeman offer, strung out across the flat lands between Forres and the Moray coast. Each one tells a different story, though I'll be honest, you won't spend hours at any single site.

Duffus Church is the easiest to find and most intact of the trio. The roofless stone shell sits in a small graveyard where locals have been buried for centuries. Walk through and you'll spot carved stones and weathered headstones that speak to generations of worship here. Spynie, a few miles east, is altogether more dramatic - a proper fortress-church with thick defensive walls that hint at more turbulent times when worship needed serious stone protection. Hopeman, closest to the coast, is the most atmospheric if you catch it right: perched on rough ground with the sea nearby, it feels genuinely remote.

History types will find plenty to interest them, particularly if you're already exploring Forres and want to understand how medieval faith was practised across Moray. Walkers might cobble them together as a loose circuit over a morning. Families with small children will get restless quickly - these aren't playgrounds, just quiet ruins.

All three are free and accessible year-round, though winter mud can be a nuisance. Allow an hour or two to visit all three without rushing. The Loft Glamping nearby makes a decent base if you're spending a few days exploring the wider region. Honestly, they're worth a detour if you're passing through, not worth planning a trip around.
