Duff House Public Gardens

The grounds around Duff House in Macduff are proper lovely if you're after a straightforward woodland walk without the tourist crowds. It's not a manicured showpiece - more a genuine nature reserve where you can actually breathe and think. The paths wind through established trees with the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Aberdeenshire in the first place.

You'll get the most from it if you're a walker who doesn't need everything signed and packaged. Families with restless kids might find it a bit tame after twenty minutes - there's no playground or visitor centre theatre. The real appeal is the space itself: a chance to stretch your legs between the caravan parks that ring Macduff. Banff Links and Myrus are both within spitting distance, so it works well as a morning outing before heading to the beach or into town for lunch.

The walk takes an hour or so depending on how many paths you explore. Go early if you want solitude - midday can bring the dog-walkers out in force. Weather matters here; on a grey Scottish day it's moody and fine, but on drizzle days it just feels damp. Spring brings out the undergrowth nicely, and autumn has proper colour if you're lucky with the season.

It's free, which counts for something. Don't expect facilities or cafes - bring a flask and a map. If you're camping nearby, this is a solid option for a couple of hours, but it's not the sort of place that'll dominate your holiday plans.
