Duddel Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Preston, Duddel Wood is one of those places that rewards you for bothering to find it. Dense trees, decent paths, and enough space to actually lose yourself for a couple of hours without bumping into crowds. The forest floor gets properly muddy after rain - bring decent boots if you're planning this in winter.

It's a walker's spot, really. Not dramatic, no waterfalls or dramatic vistas, but solid woodland that feels properly wild for Lancashire. Kids will enjoy it if they're the type who like exploring, building dens, that sort of thing. Teenagers might find it a bit samey after an hour though. The paths are manageable, nothing too steep, though you'll want to watch your footing when it's wet.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring what you need. It's free to access and open whenever - just a case of turning up. Allow two hours minimum if you want to see the whole thing without rushing.
