Duck Bay

The water at Duck Bay is proper still on most days, which makes it one of the better spots on Loch Lomond for actually seeing the reflection of the hills. It's a small pull-in affair rather than a major attraction - the sort of place you'd stop for twenty minutes on a drive round the loch, not plan a morning around.

There's a decent viewing area where you can get down to the water's edge without too much faffing about. On a clear day the views back across to Ben Lomond are worth the stop. The name suggests waterfowl, and you will spot the odd duck, but don't come expecting some kind of bird sanctuary. It's genuinely just a nice quiet bay with parking.

Families with young kids get the most from it as a quick break spot - somewhere to stretch legs and let them chuck stones in the water. Walkers doing the Loch Lomond circuit will pass nearby and some do make the detour. Photographers might find it useful for softer light in the late afternoon.

If you're staying at Loch Lomond Retreat or any of the parks dotted around Upper Stoneymollan - and there are several within a mile - Duck Bay makes sense as a five-minute drive for a bit of peace. It's free, no facilities to speak of, and no specific opening hours. Go when the weather's decent. Don't expect much, and you won't be disappointed.
