Shed Wood

Shed Wood is a proper forest walk just outside Alexandria, the sort of place that rewards you for getting off the main road and into the trees. It's not dramatic - no wild gorges or rare plants to hunt for - but it's a genuine escape into Scottish woodland where you can actually breathe without hearing the A82.

What you're getting is straightforward: mature trees, decent paths, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came north in the first place. Dog walkers love it. Families with younger kids will manage an hour or so without complaint, though there's nothing particularly engineered to entertain them. If you're after a woodland ramble rather than a destination with a gift shop and a cafe, this works.

The real appeal is location. You're sandwiched between Loch Lomond to the west and the Stirling area to the east, so Shed Wood slots neatly into a park holiday. Pop in for a morning walk from Stoneymollan Loch Lomond - just 1.3 miles away - or string it together with other local walks. The Loch Lomond Sunset Glamping Pod and Milarrochy Bay sites are also within easy reach if you're basing yourself in the area for a few days.

Bring proper footwear. Scottish woodland can be boggy even after dry spells. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. Free access, naturally. Worth the detour if you're already in the area; not worth a special trip on its own.
