About Duchess Wood
The woodland sits just outside Helensburgh on the Rosneath Peninsula, and it's the kind of place locals treasure and visitors often miss entirely. You're walking through ancient mixed woodland with mature oaks, beeches and conifers - proper forest canopy work. In spring the bluebells are decent, and any time of year it's a solid two to three hours of easy-to-moderate walking depending on which route you choose. There are established paths, though they're not manicured or signed within an inch of their life.
It suits walkers far more than families with small children - this isn't a playground with benches and ice cream vans. Bring proper boots because it gets muddy and there are roots everywhere. History types might find the woodland itself interesting (old growth forests are increasingly rare in Britain), though there's no interpretive signage explaining the ecology.
If you're staying at Rosneath Castle Caravan Park just 1.3 miles away, it's an obvious morning or afternoon option. Stoneymollan over towards Loch Lomond makes it slightly more of a detour, but still entirely doable. Free entry, no facilities. Go when you've had enough of the lochs and want something genuinely quiet.
