Dubh-Lochan

High up in the hills above Ullapool sits Dubh-Lochan, a small dark loch that rewards the effort it takes to reach it. The walk in isn't particularly long, but it's properly steep - definitely one for people who don't mind a bit of a huff and puff. Once you're there, though, you're rewarded with the sort of silence you rarely find anymore. The water is genuinely dark, almost black in certain light, which is where it gets its name. Moorland surrounds it completely, rolling away toward the Ben Mor Coigach massif.

This isn't a destination for idle wanderers or anyone expecting facilities. There's nowhere to grab a coffee, no interpretive boards, no shortcuts. What you get is raw Scottish landscape - the kind that makes you understand why people move here and never leave. The loch itself is small enough that you can take it in within twenty minutes, but the surrounding terrain is worth exploring if you've got the legs for it. Photographers will find something worth framing in any light, and walkers serious about their hills will appreciate the access to higher ground beyond.

Go early, bring waterproofs, and expect to spend two to three hours round trip including the walk and a good potter about once you arrive. It's not for everyone - but if solitude and genuine Highland scenery are what you're after, it's absolutely worth the effort.
