Dry Hill Fort

The Iron Age earthworks at Dry Hill aren't much to look at on first glance - just grassy ramparts and a ditch cutting through the Kent countryside near Edenbridge. But spend ten minutes walking the perimeter and you start to feel the purpose of the place. This was a proper defensive settlement, built around 500 BC, and you can still trace the layout of the fort despite two and a half thousand years of weathering.

It's fundamentally a walker's attraction. The site sits on open land, so there's no visitor centre, no cafe, no interpretation boards to explain what you're looking at. You need either a guidebook or some knowledge of Iron Age fortifications to make sense of it. That said, if you're interested in British archaeology or just fancy a ramble with historical weight to it, Dry Hill rewards the effort. The views across the weald are decent enough, and there's something rather moving about standing where people stood when Rome hadn't yet conquered Britain.

History enthusiasts will get the most from this. Kids might manage fifteen minutes before restlessness sets in, unless they're the type who enjoy climbing earthworks and pretending to defend a fort. It's free to visit and accessible year-round, though muddy after rain.

If you're based at Luna Domes or Glamping at Long Acres nearby, this works as a morning outing combined with a proper walk. Don't expect much - that's the point. Just bring decent boots and curiosity.
