Drumjargon Hill

The walk up Drumjargon Hill from Newton Stewart takes about an hour if you're not dawdling, and the views across Dumfries & Galloway repay the effort without question. It's a proper Scottish hill walk - nothing too brutal, but steep enough that you'll know you've earned the summit. On a clear day you can see right across the lowlands, which sounds romantic until you realise it's mostly moorland and forestry. Still, there's something satisfying about standing at 1,400 feet with minimal crowds.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with older kids can manage it, but younger ones might find it a slog on the way down. The path itself is reasonably well maintained, though muddy patches appear after rain. Allow a full morning or early afternoon for the round trip plus a proper break at the top.

Newton Stewart makes a sensible base for exploring the area, and if you're staying at Drumroamin Farm nearby, it's practically on your doorstep. The hill suits a mid-week slot when you want some air and legwork without committing to a full-day adventure. Free to access, obviously - it's a hill. Just check the weather before heading out. Nothing worse than climbing for an hour only to find yourself in cloud.
