Drumilly Mountain

The walk up Drumilly Mountain rewards you with views across the Mourne region that make the slog worthwhile, even on a grey day. It's not a massive peak - nothing like the higher Mournes that dominate the skyline - but that's rather the point. You get the sense of proper hillwalking without needing a full day or technical skills.

The ascent from Newry side is straightforward enough, following paths that get muddy after rain but nothing treacherous. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip depending on fitness and how many times you stop to catch your breath. The views open up gradually as you climb - south towards the main Mourne range, north towards Newry and the surrounding patchwork of fields and hedgerows. On a clear day you can see quite far afield.

This works best for walkers who want something achievable without committing to a full mountain expedition. Families with reasonably confident kids will manage it fine. History types might find it less interesting than some Mourne spots - it's more about the walk and the views than any particular landmark.
