Drumiller Lough

There's something quietly satisfying about Drumiller Lough - a modest expanse of water that doesn't try to be anything it isn't. Sit on the banks near Markethill and you'll find a proper peaceful spot, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The lough itself is the draw here: peaceful water, reed beds, and decent birdwatching if that's your thing. You might spot mallards, coots, and if you're lucky, a heron or two.

Walkers get the most out of this one. There's a gentle circuit around the water that takes the best part of an hour, nothing strenuous, just good straightforward footwork. It's the sort of place you come to clear your head rather than for any dramatic views or heritage centre drama. Kids won't be bored if they're the type who like spotting waterfowl and splashing about near the water's edge, but if they're after theme parks or busy attractions, this won't cut it.

The real benefit is proximity. You're minutes from Markethill and well-placed if you're staying at nearby Tepee Valley Campsite, which is excellent value and keeps the outdoorsy crowd happy. Early morning or late afternoon visits work best - fewer people, better light, more wildlife activity. Free to visit, no facilities to speak of, so come prepared. It's not a day-long destination, but as part of a local exploration alongside other Armagh countryside, it's absolutely worth the detour.
