Drumgristin Lough

The water here is properly dark and still, ringed by rough moorland that feels genuinely remote despite being just outside Newry. Drumgristin Lough isn't a tourist trap - there's no car park, no cafe, no Instagram signs telling you where to stand. You'll need to park on the narrow road nearby and walk through sheep fields to reach it, which means most people don't bother. That's the whole appeal.

It's a wild spot, honestly. The lough itself isn't huge, maybe a mile across, but it's the kind of place where you'll see curlews and maybe a heron if you're quiet. The surrounding land is blanket bog and heather moorland, so bring proper boots - it can be boggy even when it hasn't rained recently. The light changes constantly across the water, and on a clear day you get decent views towards the Mourne Mountains.

This works best for walkers and photographers rather than families with young kids. A decent circuit walk takes about two hours if you pace yourself. Birdwatchers absolutely rate it. There's something about the lack of facilities that makes it feel properly wild - you're not here for a quick tick-box visit.

If you're staying at Hilltop Hideaway nearby, this is an excellent half-day expedition. You'll have the place largely to yourself, especially on weekdays. Go in good weather - in mist or rain, it's a bit desolate. Spring and early summer are best for birdlife.
