Drumburgh Moss National Nature Reserve

The bog stretches out flat and endless, dotted with the sort of plants you'll only find in proper wetland - sundews, sphagnum mosses, the occasional bog rosemary if you're lucky. Drumburgh Moss is a working nature reserve near Wigton, and it's the kind of place that reveals itself slowly if you pay attention rather than one where you'll tick off a list and move on.

It's a genuine draw for naturalists and anyone serious about wetland ecology. Birdwatchers come for the adders and curlews, botanists for the rare plants that only thrive in acidic bog. The reserve sits on what used to be part of a much larger moss landscape - centuries of peat extraction and farming have carved it down, but what remains is worth visiting.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is either refreshing or annoying depending on how you feel about roughing it slightly. Access appears to be free, though you'll want to check locally before setting off - bog reserves can be closed during particularly wet seasons. Allow a couple of hours if you're genuinely interested; it's not a quick pop-in spot.

If you're based at Glendale Holiday Park nearby, it makes sense as a morning outing before heading elsewhere. It won't keep families with young children entertained for long, but for walkers and nature enthusiasts, it's exactly what it should be - a proper working reserve, not a theme park version of one.
