About Druid's Cave;Saint Brynach's Cave

The walk to Saint Brynach's Cave - locals call it Druid's Cave - is half the appeal. You'll head inland from Newport, climbing steadily through proper wild countryside until the land drops away and you're standing at the mouth of this modest limestone cave tucked into the hillside. Nothing fancy: just a dark cleft in the rock with water trickling through, but there's something about it. The cave sits about 200 metres up, and the views back towards the coast alone make the scramble worthwhile.

There's barely room for twenty people inside, and the floor is slick with mineral deposits and moss. You'll need a torch and sturdy boots - it's slippery work. Historians reckon Saint Brynach himself may have sheltered here in the 5th century, which is the sort of thing that makes the place feel less like a tourist attraction and more like stumbling onto someone's old refuge. No interpretation boards, no facilities, no entry fee because there's nowhere to collect one.

This works best for walkers who don't mind a bit of scrambling and won't be disappointed if the cave itself is underwhelming. Kids over ten will manage it fine; younger ones might struggle with the steep approach and muddy conditions. Aim for a dry spell - after heavy rain it's bog standard and genuinely treacherous. Allow two hours there and back from Newport town centre.

If you're based at Llwyngwair Manor or The Hide just outside town, it's a cracking half-day excursion. The wider Preseli area offers plenty of other walks if the cave turns out to be less thrilling than the journey suggests.
