Draycott Hill

The walk up Draycott Hill takes you through proper Wiltshire downland, and the view from the top is genuinely worth the effort. You're looking across open chalky slopes with hardly another soul around, even on weekends. The summit itself isn't dramatic - no stone cairn or dramatic outcrop - but that's rather the point. It's the landscape that matters here, rolling away toward Marlborough and beyond.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The climb isn't brutal, but it's steady, and you'll want decent boots on damp days when the chalk gets slippery. Allow a couple of hours return if you're taking your time. Families with teenagers might manage it fine; younger kids could find the ascent tedious without the payoff of a dramatic view or summit cafe. In late summer when the grass is dry, it's lovely. Winter can be muddy and uninspiring.

This works as a morning walk if you're staying at one of the nearby camping spots - Hillview Park is barely twenty minutes away - leaving your afternoon free for Marlborough's market town wandering or exploring the Wiltshire White Horses. The hill sits well within the broader chalk country of North Wiltshire, so it fits naturally into a longer walking holiday rather than being a standalone destination. Bring a packed lunch and spend an hour on top if the weather's decent. It's the kind of place that rewards a clear day and punishes bad weather with nothing much to show for your squelch.
