Downhill

The Roman fort at Downhill sits just outside Perth, and if you're expecting grand stonework and intact walls, you'll be disappointed. What you get instead is a grassy field with a few earthworks - the ditches and ramparts that once protected a proper military installation during the occupation of Scotland. It's the sort of place that rewards those who can read a landscape, where knowing what you're looking at transforms a flat bit of ground into something with genuine weight.

This was Stracathro, one of the northernmost Roman positions in Britain, and standing here you can almost feel the strategic paranoia behind its location. Families with older kids interested in history will find it worthwhile, but younger children will get restless fast - there's no interpretation board, no reconstructions, just you and the earthworks. Walkers and archaeology enthusiasts are the real audience here.

It's free to visit and takes about twenty minutes unless you're the type to sit and imagine the garrison. The best approach is to treat it as part of a broader circuit - combine it with a proper walk in Perth town or time at one of the nearby caravan parks like Scone, just a couple of miles away. Go on a dry day when the ground isn't waterlogged, because the ditches can turn into proper bog. If you're expecting a polished visitor experience, you'll find yourself frustrated. But if you want to stand where Roman soldiers once stood, genuinely alone and undisturbed, it's absolutely worth the short detour from Perth.
