Down Ridge

Down Ridge rises abruptly from the moorland south of South Brent, offering one of those sudden, satisfying climbs that makes you feel like you've actually gone somewhere. The walk up is brief but proper steep in places - nothing you can't manage in twenty minutes or so, but your legs will know about it. From the top, the views spread across Dartmoor in all directions, which is the real reward here. On a clear day you can pick out the granite tors and sense why people get so attached to this landscape.

It's the sort of place walkers heading to Dartmoor National Park will find themselves drawn to almost by accident. The national park sits just three miles away, so Down Ridge works well as a warm-up or a standalone excursion if you're based in South Brent and fancy a quick leg-stretch. Kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might grumble about the steepness. The moorland around here can be bleak and windswept even in summer, so pick a decent weather window.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted - there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of. Allow roughly an hour to get up, spend ten minutes catching your breath, and come back down. It's not a destination that justifies a special trip on its own, but if you're already exploring the Dartmoor area, it's well worth the detour. The kind of place that reminds you why you came to Devon in the first place.
