Doune of Invernochty

The earthwork rises abruptly from the Strathdon landscape - a proper Iron Age fort that commands the valley like it's still got something to prove. Doune of Invernochty is essentially a massive circular rampart, maybe 70 metres across, crowned with what were once formidable defensive walls. You're standing on archaeology here, not just looking at it.

Walking the perimeter takes twenty minutes if you're thorough, less if you're just after the views. The summit gives you a panorama across upper Deeside and the Cairngorms - on a clear day, genuinely worth the scramble up. It's the sort of spot where you can practically feel two thousand years of history underfoot.

Families with older kids and keen walkers get the most from this one. Younger children might find it a bit abstract - it's earthworks, not castle walls or ruins you can properly explore. There's no visitor facility, no interpretation board (last time I checked), and it's free. Allow an hour if you're local and just popping up, longer if you're combining it with the wider Strathdon landscape.

It sits perfectly within a wider Cairngorms ramble. Base yourself at Cairngorms Glamping & Campsite, less than two miles away, and you've got proper hill walking, ancient sites, and that genuine Highlands feel without the crowds of the main tourist corridor. This is Aberdeenshire at its quietest and most intriguing.
