Douglas Park

Douglas Park sits just outside Kyle of Lochalsh, a proper woodland walk through native pine and birch with the kind of quiet you don't get in cities. The reserve runs along a burn where you'll see red squirrels if you're lucky, though the light changes fast through the trees so bring a decent camera. It's not dramatic like some Highland reserves - no lochs, no mountain vistas - but that's rather the point. The paths are manageable, not too boggy, and it takes a solid hour if you potter about properly.

Walkers and nature enthusiasts will get the most from this one. Kids won't complain, but they might get restless if they were expecting something more eventful. The woodland habitat appeals to birdwatchers, especially in spring when the migrants arrive.

Access appears to be free, though there's no obvious visitor centre or facilities. Go early or late when the light's golden through the trees. If you're staying at Reraig Caravan & Camping on Skye, it's a short drive across the bridge - worth combining with a wander round Kyle itself, which has decent cafes and a working waterfront. Winter's atmospheric but February can be bleak. September and October hit the sweet spot for colour without midges.
