Dorset Alpaca Walking/Alpaca Cottage/Shepherd's Hut

You'll spend a morning walking through Dorset countryside with alpacas - actual alpacas, not a metaphor - which is exactly as odd and rather wonderful as it sounds. The setup is straightforward: you get paired with one of the animals from Dorset Alpaca, collect a walking route, and head off into the rolling hills near Dorchester. The alpacas are calm, surprisingly friendly once you get over the initial weirdness of holding a lead attached to a llama-like creature, and genuinely good company for a walk.

It's the sort of thing that sounds gimmicky until you're actually doing it, at which point something shifts. The pace slows down. You notice things - the light through the trees, sheep in distant fields, the sheer silliness of explaining to someone you passed that yes, you're walking an alpaca. Kids absolutely lose their minds with it, though they'll need to be old enough to handle the animal responsibly. Adults tend to find it either brilliant or unbearably twee, and there's not much middle ground.

The Shepherd's Hut on-site adds to the appeal - it's a proper base for a cuppa and a sit-down afterward. Allow two to three hours all in. It's not free, but it won't break the bank. This works well as a half-day activity while staying at Green Valley Yurts nearby, or as a quirky interlude during a longer Dorset trip. Worth doing once, particularly if you're bored of standard walks.
