Doons North Top

The walk up Doons North Top isn't dramatic, but it's honest work. This 432-metre peak sits on the southern edge of Lowther Hill, and from Thornhill it's a straightforward push into the Dumfries & Galloway hills that rewards you with proper Lowland views without the rock-scrambling faff of bigger peaks.

You're looking at roughly two hours up and back depending on fitness, with a well-trodden path that locals clearly use. The summit itself is a humble affair - a cairn, some wind, and on a clear day, views rolling south towards the Solway Firth and across to the Lake District fells. It's the sort of place where a decent OS map and waterproof matter more than mountain experience.

Walkers get the most from this one. It's long enough to feel like you've properly earned it, but short enough that you won't spend all day getting nowhere. Families with teenagers keen to build confidence will find it manageable; younger kids might find the bog patches and distance tedious. History types won't find much beyond the landscape itself, though the Lowther Hills have that old mining heritage about them.

Stay at Penpont Holiday Park, just 2.8 miles away - a solid base that puts you within reach of the Nithsdale walking routes. Go early on a weekday if you can, before the weather turns ugly. It costs nothing, and there's car parking at the trailhead. Not your Instagram peak, but a proper little local hike that keeps you honest.
