Donalds Carn

The walk up Donalds Carn near Larne is straightforward enough, but the real payoff sits at the top - proper 360-degree views across Mid and East Antrim that stretch all the way to the coast on a clear day. It's not a particularly demanding climb, which means families with older kids and casual walkers can manage it without turning it into an expedition.

What you're looking at once you reach the summit is moorland falling away in all directions, with glimpses of the Irish Sea glinting in the distance. The peak itself isn't dramatic - no jagged rocks or anything theatrical - but there's something satisfying about standing there after a moderate trudge uphill. On weekends it can get a bit busy with local hikers, so go early if you want solitude.

Allow a couple of hours there and back depending on your pace. It's free to visit, naturally, since it's open moorland. The nearest proper base is Larne itself, though Down to Earth Wild Camping just 4 miles away offers a more adventurous overnight option if you're planning to make a walking holiday of it.

Most hikers and walkers will get genuine value from it. History buffs might find the views interesting from a geographical standpoint, but don't come expecting stone circles or ancient monuments - this is pure landscape work. Kids under about twelve might lose interest once they've reached the top, but teenagers who enjoy walking will appreciate the effort-to-reward ratio.
