The walk up Domen Yr Allt doesn't take long, which is either brilliant or disappointing depending on your mood. From Welshpool, you're looking at a straightforward climb to this Iron Age hillfort, and the views across the Severn Valley make the effort worthwhile. The summit itself is modest - not a jagged peak or dramatic outcrop, but rather a rounded hill crowned with the remains of ancient earthworks. You can actually see the defensive ditches and banks if you know what you're looking at, though it's not going to blow your mind if you're expecting dramatic ruins.

Historically minded types will find this more rewarding than casual walkers. The defensive layout tells you something genuine about how people lived and fought in this corner of Wales a couple of thousand years ago. Allow an hour there and back, maybe 90 minutes if you're the sort to sit and take photographs. It's accessible without being taxing - proper terrain for families with older kids, though younger ones might struggle with the focus required to appreciate what they're actually looking at.

Frankly, it works best as part of a broader walk rather than a destination in itself. Combine it with exploring the wider Mid Wales countryside, or base yourself at Cae Nant Glamping or Valley View Holiday Park nearby and tick it off while you're in the area. Both parks are rated highly and give you a solid base for getting to know this quieter part of Powys. The Severn Valley has genuine character if you're willing to wander.
