Domen-Gastell Hill

The walk up Domen-Gastell Hill from Welshpool is proper rewarding - about an hour's steady climb through woodland that opens out onto moorland with views across Powys that'll make you forget how many times you've grumbled about your legs. Once you're up there, the hill itself is crowned with the remains of a motte-and-bailey castle, which is genuinely interesting if you're into that sort of thing. Medieval earthworks, basically - nothing standing, but you can still read the shape of it, and that's enough.

This isn't a peak for peak-baggers after numbers. It's for walkers who want to stretch their legs for a couple of hours without it turning into an all-day expedition, or for history types who get excited about what the landscape tells you. Families with reasonably confident kids will manage it fine on a clear day - the path's straightforward enough. On a grey afternoon, though, it can feel a bit bleak and forgettable.

The whole thing's free, naturally, and you can park near Welshpool and head straight out. Come in decent weather if you can - this hill doesn't improve in drizzle. It's genuinely worth adding to a park holiday itinerary if you're staying at Valley View or Tanat Holiday Park - you're practically on the doorstep, and it breaks up the slower pace of a caravan week nicely. About two hours all in, including a decent sit-down at the top if the views cooperate.
