Doll Tor Stone Circle

Bronze Age builders certainly knew how to pick a spot. Perched on the edge of Stanton Moor, this stone circle commands sweeping views across the Derwent Valley towards Matlock and beyond. The nine upright stones aren't the tallest you'll encounter, but there's something particularly atmospheric about their weathered presence on this open moorland.

Archaeology enthusiasts will appreciate the circle's excellent preservation and its connection to the wider prehistoric landscape of the Peak District. The walk across the moor takes about twenty minutes from the nearest parking, following clear paths through heather and birch scrub. Kids might lose interest quickly unless they're into ancient history, but it's a lovely spot for a family ramble.
