Doire Lochan

A small loch tucked into the hills above Appin, Doire Lochan is the sort of place you stumble across rather than plan for. The water sits dark and still, ringed by steep woodland that closes in tight on three sides - there's something almost secretive about it, like you've found someone's private thinking spot.

There's no formal infrastructure here, no visitor centre or café. It's just the loch itself, accessible by a short walk from the road, and that's rather the point. Walkers and photographers tend to get the most from it - the light does interesting things on the water depending on the time of day, and on clear mornings you get decent views toward the mountains. Families with younger children might find the walk a bit fiddly to organize, and it's not the kind of place to spend half a day unless you're seriously into landscape sketching or meditation.

Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're coming from Appin. There's no admission charge - it's one of those free Highlands experiences that costs only your time and petrol. Go early or late in the day to dodge any lingering tour groups heading down from Oban.

It works well as a morning detour if you're based at Creagan Station Tourers or the Oban Camping and Caravanning Club Site. Neither park is far away, and this loch makes a decent leg-stretcher between bigger days out - a proper quiet moment before heading back to the caravan for tea.
