Doire Chreagach

The walk up Doire Chreagach rewards you with views across the Kintyre Peninsula that make the climb feel genuinely worthwhile. It's a proper hill rather than a leisurely stroll - steep enough to work for, but nothing that demands technical skill or scrambling gear.

From Tarbert, you're looking at a solid two to three hours for the round trip depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. The summit itself sits at a reasonable height without the brutal exposure you get on some of the higher peaks nearby. On a clear day the views down towards Kintyre and across to the islands are genuinely outstanding - the kind of landscape that explains why people bother dragging themselves up Scottish hills in the first place.

It's the sort of walk that suits families with older kids or regular hikers after something achievable without an early start. You'll want proper boots (it can be boggy lower down) and waterproof layers - the weather changes fast up here. There's no visitor centre or facilities on the hill itself, so bring water and a snack.

If you're staying at The Gather or Tarbert Holiday Park, this makes a perfect half-day outing that gets you out of the caravan without eating your entire afternoon. The walk sits nicely between a casual mooch around Tarbert itself and tackling some of the more serious mountains further up Argyll. Go when the forecast looks settled - that's when the views actually justify the effort.
