Dodworth Miners' Memorial

A modest stone memorial in Dodworth, just outside Barnsley, marks one of South Yorkshire's darkest days. On the 9th July 1838, an explosion at Oaks Colliery killed 114 miners - at the time, the worst mining disaster Britain had ever seen. The memorial stands as a sobering reminder of the men who didn't come home.

It's not a sprawling visitor attraction with visitor centres or guided tours. There's no entry fee, no opening hours to worry about - you simply find it and pay your respects. That's rather the point. The stone itself carries the weight of that particular tragedy, and standing in front of it, you feel the reality of what mining meant for this region. No flourishes, no interpretation boards heavy with explanation. Just the names and the numbers.

History enthusiasts and anyone with roots in the mining communities will find it genuinely moving. Families visiting the nearby campsites at Broad Close Farm, Greensprings, or Mapplewell Meadows can include it as a brief but meaningful stop - perhaps fifteen minutes - on a walk around the area. It works well as part of a broader South Yorkshire heritage trip, anchoring the grim human cost that underpins so much of the region's story.

The Barnsley area has plenty of walking routes and countryside around it, and the memorial fits neatly into a day out rather than warranting a journey purely for itself. But if you're camping nearby, it's well worth finding. A proper moment of reflection.
