Dodd Fell Hill

The walk up Dodd Fell starts deceptively gentle from the lane near Hawes, but don't let that fool you - it's a proper lung-buster by the time you're scrambling over moorland to the summit. The fell tops out at 2,189 feet, and on a clear day the views across Wensleydale are genuinely worth the slog. You get the Pennines stretching away in all directions, and if you time it right, the light catches the limestone escarpments to the west in a way that makes the whole climb feel justified.

It's around two hours up from the valley floor, give or take. The route isn't technical - just relentless gradient and exposed moorland - so it suits fell walkers and keen hikers rather than casual strollers. Kids with some hill experience will manage it, though they might need persuading past the halfway point. The weather can turn quickly up here, so don't underestimate what looks like a short walk from the map.

The nearby fells work well as part of a broader Wensleydale walking holiday. Solo hikers love it. Families should consider the gentler slopes of Penhill instead if anyone's flagging. Free to roam, naturally. Bring weather gear and allow longer than you think.
