Dod Law

There's a reason walkers keep coming back to Dod Law, even though it's only 553 metres high. The peak sits just south of Wooler in the Cheviot Hills, and on a clear day the views stretch across to the Scottish border and beyond - genuinely impressive for the effort required.

The walk itself is straightforward enough. Most people approach from the north via Wooler Common, a gentle gradient that doesn't punish the legs. The summit has an Iron Age fort earthwork - nothing dramatic to look at, just grassed-over banks and ditches - but it adds a bit of historical weight to what's otherwise a scenic fell. Allow around two hours return from the car park, give or take depending on fitness and how much you want to linger.

Walkers will absolutely love this one. It's not a slog, the views are legitimate, and you're unlikely to find it rammed even in summer. Families with decent-aged kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find it a bit long if they're not keen on the straightforward path. The terrain is mostly grass and heather, so wear proper boots - it gets boggy after rain.

If you're staying at Highburn House or Riverside Wooler, both within easy driving distance, Dod Law makes a cracking half-day outing. Pair it with a walk around Wooler itself and you've got a solid day sorted. The town has enough cafes and pubs to justify a post-walk pint without feeling like you're roughing it.
