Doctors Meadow

A modest meadow on the edge of Powys that hardly announces itself, Doctors Meadow sits quietly between Oswestry and the rolling Mid Wales countryside. It's the sort of place locals know about and visitors stumble upon by accident, which is rather its charm. The meadow itself is open grassland, gently sloping, with the kind of views across the border country that make you understand why people have fought over this land for centuries. There's nothing built here, nothing commercialised - just space, sky, and the odd dog walker on a weekend.

Historically minded types will get the most from it, particularly if you're interested in the border disputes between Wales and England. The name carries weight if you know where to look. It's not a dramatic vista like you'd get from the Brecon Beacons further south, but it's the quiet sort of interesting that rewards a bit of curiosity. A short walk, really - twenty minutes, half an hour at most - so don't set aside your whole afternoon.

This works well if you're based at Cranberry Moss Camping & Caravan Site just two miles away, or any of the other parks nearby. It's the sort of addition to a day rather than a destination in itself. Pop over from Oswestry on a clear morning, stretch your legs, take a few photos. Bring the kids if you've got them - they'll find it peaceful rather than thrilling, but that's no bad thing. Free to visit, naturally, with no barriers or fussing about. The real pull is that it feels like proper Mid Wales: unvarnished, honest, and not trying too hard.
