Dùn-da-Lamh

The walk up Dùn-da-Lamh from Newtonmore is straightforward enough, but the summit rewards you with views across the Monadh Liath that make the effort worthwhile. It's not a technical climb - more of a proper hill walk that'll take you a couple of hours up and back - and the path is reasonably well-trodden once you know where to start.

What you're climbing is essentially a ridge with decent elevation gain, and on a clear day the panorama opens up nicely. The Cairngorms dominate to the east, while westward the landscape rolls away in soft folds of moorland. It's the kind of walk that suits anyone with basic fitness and decent boots.

Historically, the name translates to something like 'fort of the hands', though whether that's folklore or fact depends on which local you ask. Either way, it's the sort of hill where you genuinely feel like you've earned the view rather than driven to a car park and walked fifty metres.

Timing-wise, allow three to four hours if you're being leisurely. Spring through autumn works best - winter can make the approach boggy. It's free, obviously. If you're staying at Laggan Glamping nearby, this makes a cracking half-day outing, and you're close enough to Newtonmore for a proper meal afterward. Families with older children will manage it fine. Younger kids might struggle with the distance and the boggy bits. Worth doing if you're in the area; don't travel hours specifically for it.
