Dùn Creich

A steep climb through woodland brings you to the remains of what was once a proper Iron Age fort, perched on a hillside above Ardgay. Dùn Creich isn't much to look at these days - mainly grassy banks and the faint outline of where defensive walls once stood - but the effort to reach it pays off in views across Strathcarron that make the huffing and puffing worthwhile.

You're looking at somewhere between 500 and 1,000 years before Christ walked the earth, when this hilltop was home to a community that chose this spot deliberately. The position made sense then; it makes sense now when you realise how visible it is from the surrounding land. There's no visitor infrastructure whatsoever - no interpretation boards, no café, not even a proper car park - which means you'll have the place to yourself most days.

History enthusiasts will find it genuinely interesting, though you'll need to use your imagination a bit. It's not Hadrian's Wall. Families with older kids who don't mind a decent walk will get something out of it, but younger ones might find the forty-minute scramble up there a bit much for what amounts to bumps in the ground. Allow an hour and a half total, longer if you're the type who likes to sit and think about Bronze Age Scots.

If you're staying at Ardgay Glamping, it's close enough for a morning visit without derailing your day. Pair it with time in the valley itself rather than expecting it to anchor a full day out.
