Ditsworthy Warren House

Out on Dartmoor, between Plymouth and the heart of the moor, stands one of Devon's most atmospheric Bronze Age settlements. Ditsworthy Warren House isn't much to look at from a distance - a few low stone circles and burial mounds scattered across rough moorland - but get close and the place grabs hold of you. You're standing where people lived over 3,500 years ago. The main circle is perhaps two metres across, with standing stones marking the perimeter. Nearby are what archaeologists reckon were domestic structures, though frankly they're mostly just rings of rubble now. The real draw is the isolation and the sense of walking through deep time. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no admission fee. Just you, the stones, and a lot of heather and gorse. Expect to spend twenty minutes poking about, longer if you're into Bronze Age settlement patterns. Walkers heading out from Ivybridge or doing the broader Dartmoor circuit will find it a worthwhile detour - the moorland around here is proper walking territory, and the site slots neatly into a longer day out. It's not for everyone, mind. If you're after something with more infrastructure or grandeur, you might find yourself underwhelmed. But if you like your archaeology raw and your landscapes empty, it delivers. The nearest proper base would be Langstone Manor Holiday Park, about six miles away, making it an easy morning trip before heading deeper into the moor.
