Ditchling Common Country Park

The moment you step onto Ditchling Common you understand why locals guard this place fiercely. It's proper open country - 150 acres of chalk grassland and woodland just outside Hassocks, the sort of place that rewards getting your boots muddy before lunch.

Walking here is genuinely good. The paths wind through patches of beech and hazel with views that stretch toward the South Downs, and the grass stays open enough that you're never enclosed by trees. Spring brings bluebells; summer dries the chalk soil to pale earth. It's not dramatic scenery but it's the kind of landscape that makes you slow down.

Walkers will spend two hours here easily without rushing. Families with young children might manage an hour before someone complains their legs hurt - the terrain's gentle but there's not much to do once the walking's done. History enthusiasts won't find much to grip them, though the common's medieval past is written into the very ground.

The thing that makes Ditchling work is that it doesn't try. There's no tea room, no playground, no information board telling you what you're looking at. You just walk. If you're camping at Wild Boar Wood nearby you could tag a morning here onto your base, but frankly it's worth the drive from anywhere in Sussex. Free access, no fences, open dawn to dusk. That's the deal.
