Ditch Acre Copse

Walk into Ditch Acre Copse near Petersfield and you're immediately wrapped in proper old-growth woodland - the kind of place where light filters through dense canopy and you can actually hear yourself think. It's a small forest, nothing vast, but that's rather the point. You get the sense of being genuinely away from it all without needing to trek for hours.

The woodland is threaded with decent walking paths that meander through mixed trees and undergrowth. It's the sort of spot where you might spot deer if you're lucky, though honestly most visits you'll just enjoy the quiet and the smell of damp earth and leaf litter. The paths are manageable for families with older kids, though pushchairs would struggle on the muddier stretches. Allow an hour or so - any longer and you'll have exhausted the main routes.

This works brilliantly as a half-day outing if you're staying at Cedar Valley nearby. Combine it with a walk round Petersfield itself or a visit to one of the town's decent pubs afterwards and you've got a proper morning sorted. Winter's actually quite good for visiting - fewer insects, clearer sight lines through the bare branches, and the woodland floor is more defined.

It's free to access, naturally. Not somewhere to bring anyone expecting dramatic vistas or facilities, but for walkers wanting a genuine woodland experience without the crowds of the New Forest, this does the job well. Real, understated, no fuss.
