Disappointment Cave

The name alone makes you smile - Disappointment Cave near South Brent is deliberately underwhelming, and that's rather the point. It's a small limestone cave, modest by any measure, but the story behind it is what draws people in. Nineteenth-century miners were convinced they'd struck it rich when they broke through into this cavity, only to find nothing of commercial value. Hence the name, and honestly, the irony is better than most tourist attractions manage.

You won't need more than twenty minutes here, thirty if you're lingering and reading the boards. It's free to visit, which keeps expectations pleasantly grounded. The cave mouth is accessible without technical equipment - just sensible shoes and a torch. Inside, there's enough to see without feeling rushed: some decent formations if you know what you're looking for, and plenty of damp stone to remind you why the miners were disappointed.

This works best for curious types rather than thrill-seekers. Kids might find it interesting for ten minutes, but it's not a destination on its own. What it does do well is slot into a Dartmoor walking route. You're close to both Ashbourne Woods and Dornafield Dartmoor Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, which makes it a decent addition to a broader exploration of the area. Pair it with a proper moorland walk and some time at a nearby holiday park, and it becomes part of something bigger. Worth the detour if you're staying locally, not worth travelling across Devon specifically.
