Dipple Wood

The woodland around Dipple, just inland from Bideford, is proper quiet - the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's dense enough to feel like you've left the seaside crowds behind, even though the town is only minutes away. The forest floor is soft underfoot, dominated by a mix of oak and conifer that filters the light into this greenish-grey haze. You won't find facilities or marked trails here - it's genuinely off the radar - so wear decent boots and bring an OS map if you're being sensible.

This is walker territory, full stop. History buffs won't find much to pin their teeth into, and families with small children will get restless without a clear loop or destination. But if you're the type who enjoys a proper tromp through semi-wild woodland, there's something refreshing about its complete lack of infrastructure. It feels untamed compared to the manicured nature reserves you find elsewhere.

Stay at any of the nearby parks - Roeys Retreat is exceptional if you can snag a pitch - and use Dipple Wood as a morning wander before hitting Bideford's pubs for lunch. Give yourself a couple of hours if you're genuinely exploring; thirty minutes if you just want a constitutional. The real win is the contrast with the holiday park atmosphere - it anchors your break as something more than just a seaside stint.
