Dipping Pond

A shallow body of water just outside Billericay, the Dipping Pond is exactly what its name suggests - a proper little lake where you can actually get down and have a look at what's living in it. The water's clear enough on a decent day to spot newts, dragonflies, and all manner of pond life if you're patient. Bring a net if you're serious about it.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you've got kids who need a break from walking but aren't ready to head back to the campsite. Twenty minutes poking about in the shallows keeps them occupied while adults can sit on the bank with a flask. The surrounding area is pleasant enough - grassy banks, trees for shade - though it's not dramatic or anything.

Historically minded types won't find much here, and it won't take long to see everything. Allow 45 minutes to an hour unless the kids get completely absorbed in creature-spotting. Free to visit, naturally.

If you're staying at Barleylands Campsite or Thamesview Camping nearby, it's worth tacking onto a day trip. It works as a gentle interlude between other activities rather than a destination in itself. The pond does the job - straightforward, low-key, and good for younger explorers learning to read water life. Best visited on a warm, dry day when insects are actually about.
