Dinosaur Lamppost

There's a Victorian lamppost in Cockermouth that's had a dinosaur bolted to the top of it, and honestly, it's the sort of thing that makes you laugh out loud when you round the corner. The thing stands about twelve feet tall, all cast iron and bright green paint, with a proper fierce-looking T-Rex gripping the lamp fitting itself. Local legend says it went up sometime in the 1990s as a bit of public art, and it's become one of those landmarks everyone in town seems to know about but tourists rarely stumble across.

It's free to see, obviously - it's just sitting there on the street - and you can photograph it to your heart's content without bothering anyone. The real charm is in the absurdity of it all. Kids find it hilarious, families with young ones will definitely crack a smile, and if you're the sort who collects photos of weird roadside attractions, this one's a proper winner. You're not going to spend more than five minutes here, but it's worth routing past if you're exploring Cockermouth's centre anyway.

Pair it with a walk along the riverside or a visit to the town's other attractions, and it slots neatly into a morning wander. Don't expect a destination in itself, but as a quirky five-minute stop, it absolutely works.
