Dinosaur lampost

There's a dinosaur on a lamppost in Cockermouth. Not a replica, not a mural - an actual fibreglass dinosaur mounted on top of a street lamp, proper daft and genuinely brilliant.

It's a bit of local folklore that's somehow stuck around, though nobody seems entirely sure why it's there or when it arrived. The thing is, that's rather the point. It's not trying to be educational or meaningful. It just exists, green and a bit weathered, watching over the town centre like some sort of prehistoric guardian. Kids absolutely lose their minds when they spot it, which makes it worth flagging if you're staying nearby.

You'll find it easily enough once you know what you're looking for - a quick wander around Cockermouth's main streets will sort you out. It's free, obviously, and takes about five minutes to see, photograph, and marvel at the sheer randomness of it all.

If you're based at any of the caravan parks dotted around - Castle Guards Farm Retreat is just a couple of miles out, or Skiddaw View if you fancy something on the edge of town - this becomes a perfect excuse for a bit of town exploring. Cockermouth itself has proper attractions if the dinosaur feels a bit thin on its own. Won't occupy your whole afternoon, but it's the kind of quirky spot that makes for a decent family story.
