Dinefwr Park

The castle ruins at Dinefwr perch above the Towy Valley like something from a Welsh legend - and there's genuine history backing up the drama. This is a proper fortress, once seat of the Kings of Deheubarth, and you can walk the grounds, clamber up to the keep, and absorb views across rolling countryside that justify the climb. The park itself sits within parkland laid out in the 18th century, so there's more to explore than just the fortress: deer roam freely, the landscape is manicured but not fussy, and the River Towy winds below.

The castle bits appeal most to history types and anyone who enjoys a scramble through medieval stonework. Kids will get a solid hour here, maybe more if they're into climbing and exploring. Bring proper shoes - the ground gets muddy and the slope up to the keep is relentless. Allow two to three hours if you're not rushing.

Just outside Llandeilo, Dinefwr works brilliantly as part of a broader wandering week. It's an easy add-on to any base at the nearby glamping sites - Ravenscroft Retreats is less than a mile away - and pairs well with the river walks and smaller attractions that dot this corner of Carmarthenshire. Free admission last time I checked, though it's worth ringing ahead to confirm opening hours since staffing can be patchy out of season.
