Dillichip Park

The path into Dillichip Park curves gently through mature woodland, and within five minutes you've left Bonhill's hum completely behind. This nature reserve sits just inland from Loch Lomond's eastern shore, a proper slice of Argyll countryside that rewards a short walk with surprisingly good birdwatching opportunities and decent views across the loch when you reach the higher ground.

What you're actually doing here is following woodland trails through mixed broadleaf forest - oak, birch, alder - with the occasional open clearing where you can stop and listen. The paths are well-maintained but can be muddy in patches, especially near the wetland areas where you'll spot damselflies and dragonflies in summer. Most visitors allow 45 minutes to an hour, which gets you round the main circuit without rushing.

Walkers and keen birdwatchers will get the most from it. Families with young kids might find it a touch quiet and featureless compared to, say, a dedicated visitor centre, but the woodland walk is gentle enough for anyone reasonably mobile. The reserve connects nicely with a broader Loch Lomond trip - Loch Lomond Retreat sits just under two miles away and makes a solid base for exploring the area.

Check conditions before you go if it's been wet; there's no visitor centre or facilities on site, so come prepared. It's free and accessible year-round, though autumn colours and spring birdlife are probably the best times to visit.
