Dill doe woods

The woodland around Dildo Woods near Salisbury is proper woodland walking country - dense enough to feel like you've stepped away from civilisation, but close enough to town that you're never more than twenty minutes from a decent pub lunch. The paths wind through mixed broadleaf trees, with plenty of shade in summer and decent winter visibility once the leaves drop.

It's one for walkers rather than sightseers. You won't find dramatic viewpoints or ruins to photograph - this is about following trails, listening for birds, and letting your legs do the thinking. The woodland floor changes seasonally: bluebells in spring if you time it right, proper carpets of them. Families with young kids might manage an hour or so depending on enthusiasm levels, but this isn't a destination for picnics or play areas.

The real value here is if you're staying at Stonehenge Campsite or Brades Acre and want to spend a morning away from the usual tourist trails around Salisbury. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no crowds, no entry fees that I'm aware of, no faffing about. Just woodlands doing what woodlands do.

Allow two to three hours if you want a proper walk without rushing. The ground gets boggy in wet weather, so check conditions before heading out with trainers expecting to stay dry. Winter's quietest, spring's loveliest, and summer brings the insects.
