Dick's Copse

A proper slice of Hampshire woodland that most visitors to the area completely miss. Dick's Copse is a modest forest near Petersfield - nothing flashy, no visitor centre or gift shop, just trees, paths, and the kind of quiet you don't find near main roads. The woodland is mixed broadleaf and conifer, the sort of place where you'll hear more birds than people even on a decent day.

Walkers get the most from it. There's a network of footpaths threading through, nothing punishing but enough to properly stretch your legs for an hour or two. It's the kind of spot where you can lose an afternoon without any fuss - bring a decent map though, as signage is minimal. The paths are generally dry underfoot, even after rain, which is a bonus. On a clear day the woodland opens up enough to feel spacious rather than claustrophobic.

Truth is, it won't hold children's attention for more than an hour unless they're genuinely into nature spotting. There's no playground equipment, no dramatic features - it's functional woodland, and that's its charm if you're after a proper walk rather than entertainment. Families might use it as a leg-stretcher between activities rather than a destination in itself.

If you're camped at Woodlands Camping just three miles away, or at Hampshire Hills a bit further out, Dick's Copse makes a sensible morning ramble before heading elsewhere. Free access, no restrictions as far as I can tell, and it costs nothing to find out if quiet woodland is your thing.
