Dick Whittington Park

The park sits just outside Mitcheldean, a modest corner of the Forest of Dean that pays tribute to one of England's most famous folk tales. Dick Whittington - the medieval Lord Mayor of London whose rags-to-riches story has been pantomime fodder for centuries - supposedly passed through these parts, and the locals have made sure nobody forgets it.

It's a small, straightforward memorial space rather than a full-blown attraction. You get a pleasant walk, some local history signage, and a chance to stretch your legs if you're exploring the wider Herefordshire countryside. The setting itself is lovely enough - proper Forest of Dean territory with trees and quiet lanes - but the park won't hold your attention for more than half an hour unless you're genuinely invested in medieval merchant tales.

Walkers doing a longer loop through the area will find it a decent waypoint. Families with young kids might appreciate the open space and the story element, though there's nothing interactive to keep them entertained beyond that. If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping sites - The Roost Retreats is just 2.3 miles away, or Apple Orchard Camping a touch further - it's a pleasant morning wander before breakfast rather than a reason to drive out specially.

Go if you're already in the Forest of Dean hopping between parks. Skip it if you're time-limited. The novelty factor is the main draw here, not the facilities or views.
