Deserted medieval village of Ulnaby

Wander through the lumps and bumps of Ulnaby and you're literally walking through a village that emptied out sometime in the medieval period. There's nothing standing - no church, no cottages with walls - just the earthworks where people once lived, worked, and farmed. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of imagination and a decent pair of boots.

This is proper archaeology-on-foot territory. You can make out the ridge-and-furrow patterns of old fields, spot where house platforms once sat, and trace what might have been a village green. It takes about an hour to get a real feel for the layout, less if you're just passing through. The site sits near Shildon, so it's an easy stop if you're exploring County Durham's industrial heritage alongside its older stories.

Walkers and history types will find it absorbing. Young children might struggle with the abstract nature of it - they're not seeing ruins or objects, just earthworks - so manage expectations if you've got little ones. The site is free and open access, which means you can visit whenever, though it's best in winter or early spring when the ground cover is lower and the earthworks show up more clearly.
