Derwent Gorge and Muggleswick Woods National Nature Reserve

The River Derwent has carved something rather special through this corner of County Durham - a proper gorge with steep wooded sides that feel worlds away from the industrial heritage of Consett just down the road. Muggleswick Woods National Nature Reserve protects the whole lot, and once you're in amongst the ancient woodland, you could almost forget you're in the North East at all.

The walk itself is the whole point. You follow the river through a mix of broadleaf woodland - oak, ash, birch - with the water rattling over rocks below. It's not a casual stroll; the terrain's uneven and you'll need decent boots, especially after rain. Most people allow two to three hours for a proper circuit, though you can do shorter sections if you're pressed for time. The gorge sides are genuinely steep in places, which adds drama to the walk but means it's not ideal for very small children or anyone with mobility issues.

This suits walkers and nature types far more than families looking for an afternoon activity. Birdwatchers come here regularly - you might spot woodpeckers, nuthatches, and various warblers depending on the season. Spring and early summer are when the woodland floor comes alive, though autumn's brilliant too for colour.

It's free to access and there's parking at Muggleswick village. Pair it with a walk around nearby Derwent Reservoir if you want to make a day of it. Worth the effort - this one genuinely impresses.
