Derry Hill

The walk up Derry Hill from Ilkley is proper Yorkshire moorland - steep in places, muddy when wet, and absolutely worth the effort. You're looking at around 30 minutes of solid climbing through bracken and heather, with the Wharfe Valley spreading out behind you as you gain height. The summit itself isn't dramatic - there's no trig point or cairn to announce you've arrived - but the views across the moorland plateau are excellent on a clear day.

Walkers and hikers will get the most from this one. It's not a casual stroll, and families with small legs might find the gradient annoying, though older kids who like a challenge won't mind. The terrain is open moorland throughout, so navigation is straightforward, and you can link it with walks toward White Wells or down to the valley if you want to make a longer day of it.

There's no visitor infrastructure - no café, no facilities, nothing at all really - so come prepared with water and a snack. It's free, naturally. Best tackled in dry conditions; after rain the path gets boggy and the bracken soaks you through.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Clarion Lodge or Moor Valley are closest at just over a mile away - this is an ideal half-day outing. Combine it with a wander round Ilkley town itself or head down to the riverside walks, and you've got a decent Yorkshire day sorted. The moorland can feel exposed in poor visibility, so check the weather forecast first.
