Derry, dun site

You'll find yourself standing on a grassy mound near Crieff, staring at what amounts to a rather modest earthwork - and that's precisely the point. Derry is an Iron Age dun, one of those defensive structures that Scottish hillforts were built around, and while it doesn't announce itself with dramatic ruins or visitor facilities, there's something rather satisfying about piecing together what life looked like here two thousand years ago.

The site itself is essentially a circular fortification marked by banks and ditches, best appreciated if you've got a decent map and don't mind a bit of detective work to interpret what you're looking at. It's the sort of place that rewards walkers and archaeology enthusiasts far more than casual tourists after a quick photo stop. You'll want to allow maybe thirty minutes here unless you're really keen on Iron Age settlement patterns, in which case bring binoculars and a field guide.

This works well as part of a broader Perthshire archaeology circuit rather than a standalone destination. If you're based at Loch Earn Leisure Park or Balquhidder Braes - both proper decent spots for a park holiday - Derry makes a perfectly reasonable detour on a walking day. The landscape around Crieff is genuinely lovely for rambling, and adding an archaeological element gives you something to think about beyond the views.

Free to visit, naturally. Just check the ground conditions before you head out - it's farmland, not a manicured heritage site.
